한국원자력의학원은 2023년 6월 13일 파키스탄 공학응용과학연구소와 사이클로트론 기반 방사성동위원소 및 방사성의약품 연구개발을 위해 국제공동연구 협력협약을 맺었다.

온라인을 통해 체결한 이번 협약은 파키스탄의 공학 및 방사성동위원소 이용 연구에서 주도적인 역할을 하고 있는 파키스탄 공학응용과학연구소와 한국원자력의학원이 방사성동위원소를 이용한 응용과학 기술 개발과 고도화로 사회경제적 고부가 가치 창출에 대한 공감대를 형성하여 성사됐다.

양 기관은 ▲의료용 사이클로트론 및 방사성동위원소 생산기술 연구 ▲방사성의약품 제조기술 연구 ▲방사성동위원소 핵의학 응용연구 ▲방사선생물학 및 관련 응용연구 ▲방사화학ㆍ방사선치료ㆍ 방사선방호 등의 분야에서 연구협력 사업을 추진한다.

특히 파키스탄의 방사선 분야 전문인력 양성을 위해 단기 및 중장기 연수, 석ㆍ박사 및 박사후 연수를 실시하고, 역량강화를 위한 인력 협력교류를 비롯해 공동연구 실험실 구축에 박차를 가할 계획이다.

이진경 원장은 “이번 협약으로 의학원의 축적된 방사성동위원소 및 방사성의약품 응용 연구기술이 파키스탄 방사선의학 발전에 원동력이 되어 파키스탄 자국민의 건강 증진에 도움이 되기를 바란다”고 말했다.

Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) signed a virtual memorandum of understanding with Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS), which includes collaboration on the development and implementation of projects related to cyclotron-based radioisotope and radiopharmaceuticals on 13th June. PIEAS is an organization which plays a leading role in engineering and radioisotope studies in Pakistan.

Both institutes plan to propel research projects in the field of ▲Medical cyclotron and radioisotope production technology ▲Radiopharmaceutical manufacturing technology ▲radioisotope nuclear medicine applications ▲radiation biology and related applied research ▲radiochemistry, radiation therapy, radiation protection and so on.

In particular, trainings including short- to long-term, master's/doctoral and post-doctoral programs will be conducted to foster Pakistani experts in the field of radiation. Moreover, It is planned to accelerate the establishment of joint research laboratories including manpower exchanges for capacity building.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, president Jin-kyung Lee said, “I hope that KIRAMS’ cumulative studies on radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical application will serve as a driving force for the development of Pakistani radiology and help improve the health of Pakistani people.”
