(National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan)
The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences Successfully Completes Technical Cooperation Scientific Visit Programme with Kazakhstan Expert as IAEA Rays of Hope Anchor Centre
As an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rays of Hope Anchor Centre, the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) hosted a one-week Technical Cooperation Scientific Visit Programme from May 11 to 15, 2026, inviting a biological dosimetry expert, Dr. Laura Kenzhina, from the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The objectives of this programme were to disseminate Korea’s specialized expertise in biological dosimetry and its national cooperative response system for large-scale radiological emergencies with the trainee, and to provide meaningful experiences for establishing a biological dosimetry cooperation network in Central Asia.
The programme offered a series of workshops and hands-on laboratory training sessions which focused on Korea’s medical response system for suspected radiation exposure cases, the principles and practical application of biological dosimetry, ISO 15189-based quality assurance activities, research and development utilizing AI-based automated biological dosimetry, automated analysis equipment, and KIRAMS’ current radiological R&D and international cooperation activities.
A key component of the programme was the introduction of the Korean Biological Dosimetry Network (K-BioDos). The trainee engaged in the K-BioDos workshop and particiapted in discussions concerning the operation of Korea’s cooperative response system, inter-laboratory comparison results for proficiency management, the use of a biological dosimetry image bank, and research activities conducted by participating institutions.
Dr. Laura Kenzhina of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan expressed her sincere appreciation to the IAEA and KIRAMS for organizing the scientific visit programme. She stated, “This scientific visit was a very meaningful opportunity to directly learn about KIRAMS’ biological dosimetry technologies and the operation of Korea’s cooperative response system through K-BioDos.” She further added, “The experience gained through this programme will be valuable for establishing a biological dosimetry cooperation network in Central Asia. I also hope to continue our collaboration with KIRAMS through future joint research projects.”
This IAEA Technical Cooperation Scientific Visit programme provided a meaningful opportunity to share Korea’s practical experience in building and operating a national-level biological dosimetry cooperation network. The trainee’s participation in these sessions resulted in a significant advancement in their comprehension of Korea’s radiation emergency medical response system, biological dosimetry technologies, and quality management practices. KIRAMS plans to use this event as an opportunity to continue strengthening cooperation between Korea and Kazakhstan in the field of biological dosimetry. In addition, KIRAMS aims to continue promoting specialized training programs and international joint research to share Korea’s experience and technical capabilities in large-scale radiation emergency response with the Asia-Pacific and Central Asian regions.
