  한국원자력의학원은 12월 12일, 의학원 본원에서 일본 후쿠시마 의과대학 대표단을 초청해 「방사선비상진료·핵의학 국제협력 심포지엄」을 개최했다. 이번 행사는 지난 2월 협력 범위를 방사선비상진료에서 핵의학 분야까지 확대해 재체결한 양해각서 (MOU)에 따른 후속 교류로, 세이이치 타케노시타 총장과 슌이치 야마시타 부총장을 비롯한 후쿠시마 의과대학 주요 보직자 및 교수진이 참석해 자리를 빛냈다.

  후쿠시마 의과대학과 한국원자력의학원은 방사선재난 대응과 핵의학 연구를 핵심 임무로 수행해 온 기관으로, 공통된 전문 영역을 바탕으로 2017년부터 방사선비상진료 분야 협력을 이어왔다. 특히 후쿠시마 제1원전 사고 대응 과정에서 축적된 후쿠시마 의과대학의 경험과 국제적 연구 성과는 양 기관 협력의 중요한 토대가 되어 왔으며, 후쿠시마 의과대학의 아스타틴-211(At-211) 기반 표적 알파입자 치료 연구와 한국원자력의학원의 악티늄-225(Ac-225) 생산 역량 등 핵의학 분야 연구 성과는 난치암 치료 연구 협력을 위한 양해각서 협력 범위 확대에 핵심적인 역할을 했다.

  심포지엄에서는 환영사에 이어 양 기관의 소개와 함께 핵의학 및 방사선비상진료 분야 발표가 진행됐다. 한국원자력의학원은 방사성동위원소 활용과 방사선비상진료체계 현황을 중심으로 국내 대응 역량을 공유했으며, 후쿠시마 의과대학은 사고 이후 재난 의료 경험과 방사선 피폭 영향 연구, 정밀 표적치료 기술을 소개하며 협력 가능 분야를 제시했다. 이후 의학원의 주요 연구·진료 인프라를 둘러보고, 공동연구 우선순위와 지속 가능한 협력 구조, 세부 협력과제 도출을 위한 논의가 이어졌다.

  이진경 원장은 개회사에서 재체결한 양해각서가 실제 교류로 이어지는 첫걸음임을 강조하며 “양 기관이 각자의 경험과 기술을 공유해 인류의 건강과 안전이라는 공동의 사명을 함께 수행해 나가길 기대한다.”고 밝혔다. 이에 세이이치 타케노시타 후쿠시마 의과대학 총장 역시 환영사를 통해 “후쿠시마 의과대학의 핵심 분야인 핵의학과 방사선비상진료 분야에서 한국원자력의학원과의 협력이 과학적 성과를 넘어 환자와 지역 사회의 건강 증진으로 이어지는 데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.”고 전했다.

  한국원자력의학원은 이번 심포지엄을 계기로 방사선 위기대응 역량과 국제협력 체계를 한층 강화해 나갈 계획이다. 재난을 넘어 생명을 향하는 과학의 여정 속에서, 또 하나의 전환점을 맞은 양 기관 협력이 지속적으로 발전해 나가길 기대한다.

Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences – Fukushima Medical University host International Symposium on Radiation Emergency and Nuclear Medicine

  The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) hosted the “International Symposium on Radiological Emergency and Nuclear Medicine” at its main headquarters on December 12th, inviting delegates from Fukushima Medical University (FMU), Japan. This event served as a follow-up exchange under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) renewed in February, expanding the scope of cooperation from radiation emergency medical care to nuclear medicine. The event was attended by key officials and delegates from FMU, including President Dr. Seiichi Takenoshita, and Vice President Dr. Shunichi Yamashita.

  FMU and KIRAMS share common core missions of radiation disaster response and nuclear medicine research and have cooperated in the field of radiation emergency medical care since 2017. In particular, FMU’s experience during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident and its international research achievements have served as an important foundation for cooperation between the two institutions. FMU’s research on targeted alpha particle therapy using Astatine-211 (At-211) and KIRAMS’ production capabilities for Actinium-225 (Ac-225) played a pivotal role in expanding the scope of the MOU for collaborative research on the treatment of intractable cancers.

  Following the welcome address, the symposium opened with introductions of both institutions, followed by presentations on nuclear medicine and radiation emergency medical care. KIRAMS shared its domestic response capabilities, focusing on the utilization of radioisotopes and the current status of the radiation emergency medical care system. FMU introduced its post-accident disaster medical experience, research on the effects of radiation exposure, and precision targeted therapy technologies, highlighting potential areas for collaboration. This was followed by a tour of KIRAMS’ key research and medical infrastructure, and discussions were held to identify joint research priorities, establish a sustainable cooperation framework, and derive specific collaborative projects.

  President of KIRAMS, Dr. Jin Kyung Lee, emphasized that the renewed MOU marks the first step towards substantive exchange; stating, “We look forward for both institutions sharing their respective experiences and technologies to jointly fulfill our shared mission of safeguarding human health and safety.” Dr. Seiichi Takenoshita, President of FMU, also expressed, “We look forward to the cooperation between Fukushima Medical University’s core field of nuclear medicine and radiation emergency medicine care and the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences to contribute not only to scientific achievements but also to enhancing the health of patients and the local community.”

  KIRAMS plans to further strengthen its radiation emergency response capabilities and international cooperation framework through this symposium, marking a turning point for both institutions’ development through international cooperation.
